New song release - Coast of You by Amy-Lynn Denham a neopsychedelic dream pop escape

I’m tinkering away at the upcoming album and wanted to give everyone a sneak peek with a brand new single “Coast of You.”

This was one of the first songs I wrote specifically with this album in mind. It came to me as I worked on my upcoming novel “Echoes of You” (same title as the upcoming album 😉). Let me set the stage without giving away too much about the book itself:

It’s nearly midnight.
I’ve been sequestered in my bedroom working away on my book.
I’m lost in the world; in the characters. Each breath I breathe becomes a breath of life in the chapters of their existence.

I’ve lost myself again, tonight.
Just as I’ve lost myself in so many nights past.
My husband has hardly seen me the past week. I’ve hit a stride in my writing and I refuse to pull myself away from it. I must keep working because the ideas flow like water from my mind to my laptop.

Then, there it is — the scene with the song. The epic song. The song that defines the book and so much more.

I’m on the floor of my room, my back crunched up against the siderail of bed. It’s digging into my spine but I hardly notice. My legs are crossed beneath me, supporting my laptop as I work. My legs have long gone numb but, again, I do not notice. All I notice is the thumping beat in my ears. Not my heartbeat but the beat of a song. The epic song…

And that’s how it came to me.

I played the same low-fi coffee shop music mix on Spotify that I always played when I wrote, but I found myself drawn to a particular song. It formed the backdrop of what I was to write. The melody flowed to my lips as I hummed to myself under my breath, formulating the lyrics with my fingertips as I continued to write my book.

Until, finally, there it was. I was ready to be born.

Flash forward a few weeks and I find myself in my room, yet again, but this time it is not my laptop in my hands — it is my guitar.

It’s time to take the vocal melody and lyrics and put them to song. I abandon any memory of the low-fi music I used to write the song to (it only offered a vibe and a beat). Now I make it truly my own. But I guess I cannot say it is truly my own. Afterall, it partially belongs to the characters of my book; the characters of Echoes of You.

My health fails me for a little while and I’m set back, but over the next few months I bring this song fully to life. I record the guitar and some vocals over a basic beat in my favourite digital audio workspace. I get out my keyboard and add some synthy sounds to the mix. I midi in a bassline. From there it’s all processing, mixing, and mastering. It’s little tweaks here and adjustments there. A final laydown on the vocals. Background melodies until it hits just right.

And there it is, born and fully grown… Coast of You…
