Run Away – A song of longing. Behind the scenes of this indie alt rock single

How to begin a blog post about a song? If only I knew. I’m well versed in the use of writing in marketing – creating blog posts for my own business and countless others in my marketing career. But when it comes to the arts there’s something, well, different. I suppose it’s the goal.

Do I want you to listen to my song? Of course I do! But do I want to spend this post convincing you? Nope. Do I want to worry about creating a hook at the beginning of this post to keep you moving? Nope. Do I really care about headers and subheaders? No, but I will use them so that this doesn’t feel like a novel 😆

I guess I’ll start by telling you a bit about this song. Though, to be honest, there are some things I think I’ll keep to myself. It kind of ruins the whole part of art, for me, when someone overexplains their intentions. Maybe this song will mean something different to you than it does to me. I don’t wanna ruin that.

Setting the stage – All things vibey

Listen, I don’t care what anyone says, vibes are important when creating music.

Sure, you can write a song pretty much anywhere and most of my melodies enter my mind as I wander in literal circles around my house waiting for food to cook (true story). But when it comes to laying down a track, the vibes gotta’ be just right.

“Run Away” was written in bits and pieces as a poem over the course of a year or so (way back in the days of COVID) and sat in a dusty old binder in my garage, slowly collecting the scent of stale cigarette smoke (not mine, I’m a cool kid who quit).

It wasn’t until the hopes buried in these lyrics had actually come to fruition and I had reembarked on my music career that I decided to turn it into an actual song. And once it was ready, it was time for the vibes.

Most recording and other studio work was done under the blanket of night or with the gentle pitter patter of rain outside my window. A pink t-shirt draped over a lamp. A single live plant breathing into the air. Twinkle lights above that always make me feel like I’m floating underwater or sitting beneath a blanket of fireflies. (Side note – these vibes coincide with the vibes of my entire Echoes of You project, which this song will be part of).

Headphones on. All is quiet.

Enter the ocean.

A song built for two – The joint effort behind “Run Away” by Amy-Lynn Denham

Ok, I tried to make that last header count with keywords 😆 Guess you can take the girl out of marketing but you can’t take the marketing out of the girl 🤷🏻

“Run Away” is the second song I fully finished and recorded since diving back into music after my (in my opinion) super cringey first indie album “Illusive Dreams.” Click here to watch me watch and react to some of that old music.

I’ll be honest, music is often a solo process for me. I’ve definitely had some friends who I’ve created midnight songs with that were quickly forgotten the next day, but I’ve never had the honor of working with a band or truly collaborating with anyone else. The closest I’ve gotten is sending people my almost finished songs to get some feedback.

But “Run Away” wasn’t just for me. It was for my husband. So, I was delighted to get to have him help out on this track. He reviewed every major iteration and had a lot of input on the drum track and the overall feel of the song. (Though he claimed no songwriting credits, his contribution is woven throughout the entire song).

Not quite made for the Echoes of You book but fit the vibe too well

I definitely wrote this song from personal experience and it holds a unique place in my heart and my history. But when I decided to fully commit to the Echoes of You project it became clear: This song needed to be on the album.

There was no way around it.

It was going to happen.

So, although it was the first song recorded for the album, it certainly wasn’t the first one written and isn’t the most tied to the actual storyline of the Echoes of You book. The rest of the Echoes of You album will be more closely linked to the book’s storyline and many of the other songs are actually featured in the book itself… but I’ve already said too much 😉
